The world's largest jazz festival turns downtown Montreal into the grooviest spot on the planet for two weeks every July, when 3000 artists from 30 countries descend on the city for an unforgettable celebration of music. While the fest features music of all genres, the focus is jazz, with enough clout every year for serious jazz junkies to get their fix. In 2008, the festival welcomed Leonard Cohen, Al Green, Woody Allen, Katie Melua, Nikki Yanofsky and a blowout closing concert by legendary African musician Mory Kante.
If you're short on cash but big on parties, don't miss the free outdoor show that closes the fest, which usually attracts spectators in the hundreds of thousands.

The Jazz Fest, an amazing time to come visit Montreal, the city is full of life and excitement when it comes to town. The streets are full until the late hours, we become the city that never sleeps. It is an amazing thing to live in such a VIbrant city and trust me if your vacation falls in between the 2 weeks of the Jazz Fest I would suggest going and checking it out. YOu can spend the entire day watching free shows of Artist who truly enjoy playing. They dont do it for the money, but for the pure enjoyment of entertaining others. Rain or Shine people sit, stand and watch preformances that vary from Jazz, classical, Rock, Pop, Hip Hop and many others gendres….drinking in the streets has never been better!

Fun for Everyone
I don’t really like jazz but I “love” the Jazz Festival and plan my summer vacation around it.
I get the schedule and highlight the ones I want to see/hear. It’s more about just being outside, eating, drinking and socializing. I have attended the closing performance for the past several years and all I can say is “WOW”. Being there with thousands of people., you can’t help but laugh alot and make new friends. Last year was incredible….the whole crowd was up dancing. I didn’t want it to end. It’s a great way to start the summer and I wouldn’t miss it for anything.

Jazz lovers will still be pleased
I can’t say I’m really a fan of jazz, but this festival really isn’t about jazz. If the weather is nice, there’s no better way to spend a day in Montreal than wandering around the closed-off areas of the jazz fest in the summertime, catching a bit of a free concert and moving on. The city gets really busy during the fest and has a great buzz – there’s even a lot of stuff to do for kids. I’ve seen a bunch of the free outdoor shows and they were a mix of hits and misses, but you can’t ever go wrong with the vibe of the big close-out show, no matter who is playing.
