Hotel Basico
Playa Del Carmen | $$$ | Website
[Description by Mexico Boutique Hotels] For anyone thinking that the hotel Basico is about plain and bare design, think again. Themed around basic concepts with a strong local identity, the Basico hotel challenges preconceived notions of what a design hotel should be, glamorous and style-savvy. Here, popular culture is celebrated in a hip, cool and ultimately entertaining fashion.
Located only steps from the ocean, off 5th Avenue amid the bustling center of Playa del Carmen, Basico opens its doors to a fashionable crowd with 15 rooms distributed over four floors.
White concrete walls, tile floors made in a nearby factory, and intentionally exposed plumbing and electrical ducts create the design foundation in these spaces. Surprising are the floating beds and the details below and above them. For example, a white Polaroid camera sits above the bed, waiting to capture special moments, while cameras that survey water conditions stream video straight into the rooms vía the plasma screen TV.
The open kitchen allows guests to choose their fish and side dishes, which are then grilled in a casual atmosphere. A gigantic leafy tree offers shade and shelter for long, lazy lunches.
The top floor hosts the Azotea Bar and pool area. Two petroleum tanks serve as pools, offering superb views of the Caribbean Sea. Customized truck fronts serve as cabanas with built-in mattresses, while the remaining area is decorated with sporadically placed chairs and hammocks. In the steamy evenings, guests enjoy the sea breeze accompanied by the sounds of local DJs, a marimba and the projection of tropical films on the surrounding walls.
Basico, a respectful yet original ode to Mexico´s popular culture, will appeal to youthful national and foreign guests alike.
