El Fogon

Playa Del Carmen | $

If you’re looking for authentic Mexican, you’ll find it here at El Fogon. The food is about as cheap as you can get and it’s tasty. Order a Victoria beer, sit back and enjoy what many locals rely on daily….chicken, beef tacos with the option of side dishes like cactus. Warning….their green hot sauce resembles the avocado dip so be careful when poring it on your tacos.

Cheap and easy

I learnt early on in my travels that if a restaurant is full of locals, it has to be good. So Steph and I tried El Fogon and although she seems to like it way more than I do I have to respect the place.

These tacos are pretty good, made even better with the hot sauces provided and I’ll sometimes ask for cheese to be added. Wash all of this down with my favorite local beer (Victoria). Now the best part of el Fogon isn’t the chunks of pineapple they serve with the meat, or the real local feel, it’s the bill!! Sometimes cheap and easy is a good thing.

The best tacos for LUNCH, DINNER & AFTER HOURS!!!

Looking for some quick, cheap and savory tacos? El Fogon is THE PLACE to go. With 3 locations in Playa Del Carmen, one on Constituyentes and 30th avenue, one on 6th and 30th, and the other on 35th in the heart of el Centro, you’ll find a mixture of both locals and tourists devouring their delicious tacos. My favorite are the Tacos Al Pastor con queso, served with Pineapple…mmmm I love the mix of salty and sweet!

If you’re vegetarian, they have a couple of vegetarian dishes – grilled vegetables with Cheese, served with tortillas and veggie Tortas (sandwiches)

And if you’ve been partying to wee hours in the night, there’s nothing like eating some greasy tacos as a preventative cure to the next day hangover. Keep in mind they close at 4 am.

Late night treat

For those in Halifax, El Fogon is Playa del Carmen’s equivalent of Pizza Corner. Well, it was for me anyway. After a good night of partying, get your taxi driver to stop here for some great authentic Mexican food. It’s always a good sign when you have a mix of locals, ex-pats and tourists all in the same place. The reason is simple: the food is awesome. And it’s cheap too.

I have been to El Fogon five or six times during three trips to Playa. I would go through the menu item by item but, truth be told, I don’t remember the names of all of the things I have eaten there and, truth be told, I may have been a wee bit intoxicated…each time.
